Fuel elements use different cladding materials such as aluminum, zircaloy, and stainless steel, depending on the reactor type (see Nuclear Reactor Materials). Based on the cladding material, either chemical or mechanical decladding is selected.

In the former, the cladding alone is dissolved whereas the fuel core remains undissolved.
